about

In early August I went to a songwriting camp in Colorado called Rocky Mountain Song School. Wanting to maintain some of the momentum of that week, I joined in with a group of friends from camp who took on the challenge to write a song a day for a week. Since I missed the actual class, I didn't catch on that the Fearless Songwriting week was happening till Tuesday. The whole idea is to write without fear, a whole song every day, and just see what happens. Intense and freeing at the same time.

Here are my demos from the week. They are all rough. I'll probably leave them for a while and then come back and see which ones I may want to continue working.

Click on each title to go to the song's page and read a bit more about my process for that day.

about

I love music and I'm so grateful for all the gifts it has brought to my life. In May 2011, I took a huge leap of faith and moved from Iowa down to Austin for a year, to study at Rubicon Artist Development and make my first EP. Stay tuned...

Track Name: Tuesday - Tune as Old as Time (Demo)
There’s a guitar case on the sidewalk between old gum and spit
There’s a crumpled old fedora on the man who’s next to it
He’s twanging out a tune as the passers pass him by
He doesn’t seem to notice through his wrinkles and his beard
If anyone has seen him or anybody hears

Tune as old as time, fresh as summer rain
Heal a broken heart, crack it open with new pain
Tune as old as time, never heard before
Pack up both your bags and the crowd will ask for more
Tune as old as time

There’s a toddler in a sweater wearing tiny Mary Janes
She’s bouncing to the music, chubby fingers clutching change
Ecstatically experiencing something so brand new
She’s laughing and she’s pointing, drool is running down her chin
She looks back to her mother with a giant toothless grin

Tune as old as time, fresh as summer rain
Heal a broken heart, crack it open with new pain
Tune as old as time, never heard before
Pack up both your bags and the crowd will ask for more
Tune as old as time

Mom nods a confirmation, baby shuffles to the case
She drops her sticky quarters in, change flashes ‘cross his face
Spark of light begins to sparkle as he spreads his pink gums wide
Lifts his head in recognition of a kindred spirit soul
Unbridled sloppy joy rushes through both young and old

Tune as old as time, fresh as summer rain
Heal a broken heart, crack it open with new pain
Tune as old as time, never heard before
Pack up both your bags and the crowd will ask for more
Tune as old as time

Made new again.
Track Name: Wednesday - Feed Me With Beauty, I'll Be Fine (Demo)
My life is an essay
my mind is a red pen
I am slashing
I am circling
I am jotting in the margins
I can’t see what was written
‘neath this bloody sea of lines
it is red, it is red, it is red
I am blind

Feed me
with beauty
bring back
my time
Feed me
with beauty
I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine

My heart is a mirror
that I hold up to her face
I am smiling
I am cheering
I say life is not a race
But the back of the mirror
Is the side that’s facing me
in the back of the mirror
there isn’t much to see

Feed me
with beauty
bring back
my time
Feed me
with beauty
I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine

My stomach is a bank account
I’m pinching every cent
I am fighting
I am hungry
Every dollar has been spent
Want to take my heart to dinner
cuz I love to hear her laugh
but I got a parking ticket
and double charged for overdraft

Feed me
with beauty
bring back
my time
Feed me
with beauty
I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine

My pride is a dancer
Who says her card is full
She is standing
In the corner
She is acting really cool
Making fun of all the movers
and the shakers on the floor
who are much too busy dancing
to even bother keeping score

Feed me
with beauty
bring back
my time
Feed me
with beauty
I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine.
Track Name: Thursday - Wild Child (lyrics only)
In the dream I am pregnant, growing round as the moon
I am watching my baby in an underwater room
She has found a perfect pearl and holds it up to the light
And the woman there beside her is teaching how to read & write
In the language that they speak where she is about to go
It feels clumsy on her tongue but they are the only words they know

So strange, so wild
Those eyes, that child

In my dream a chocolate baby lives in the room next door
He is learning the same language but isn’t sure what for
My baby and this baby already seem so wise
but they signed up for “forgetting” and for “asking lots of whys”
Which both seemed like fun classes in the syllabus of life
along with “forgiving 101” and a dash of “midlife crisis”

So strange, so wild
Those eyes, that child

In the morning I am nervous, I don’t know what it means
Should I tell him about the underwater dream?

So strange, so wild
Those eyes, that child
Track Name: Friday - Tossing a Coin (Demo)
Tossing a coin, Which side will it land on?
Tossing a coin, I could go either way
Tossing a coin, Is it winter or desert?
Tossing a coin, Is it slaving or play?

Tossing a coin, I can count on good money
Tossing a coin, Could bankrupt my heart
Tossing a coin, Is it planning or freedom?
Tossing a coin, Is it riches or art?

If I let the coin fall
I can have it all
Each hourglass grain is golden
When I fill my time with color and rhyme
I forget how I think I’m beholden
So I’m tossing, I’m tossing, I’m tossing, I’m tossing, I’m tossing, I’m tossing the coin.
